W. Nile-Q Real-Time PCR Kit

Product Overview

West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne pathogen with an expanding global footprint, capable of causing severe neuroinvasive disease including encephalitis and meningitis, particularly in the elderly and immunocompromised. With no specific vaccines or treatments available, early and accurate diagnosis is the primary clinical tool for guiding patient management and triggering public health responses. Traditional serological assays take 4 to 10 days and may lack sensitivity, while the gold-standard plaque reduction neutralization test is confined to specialized reference laboratories, creating a significant diagnostic gap in routine clinical settings.

The W. Nile-Q Real-Time PCR Kit from Genes2Me delivers sensitive, specific detection of WNV RNA in EDTA blood samples. Using a multiplex one-step RT-qPCR design with TaqMan chemistry, it provides rapid, reliable results that support timely clinical intervention and outbreak surveillance.

Genes2Me is a CE Marked molecular diagnostics company trusted by clinical laboratories across global markets. The W. Nile-Q Real-Time PCR Kit meets European conformity standards for in vitro diagnostic devices, validated to international benchmarks for accuracy, reliability, and safety.

How the Assay Works

The W. Nile-Q kit uses a multiplex one-step RT-qPCR format with TaqMan chemistry. WNV-specific RNA is detected in the FAM channel, while an endogenous internal control monitored in the HEX channel verifies RNA integrity and reaction quality in every run. A positive control template is included to validate assay performance, and a no-template control confirms reagent integrity and eliminates contamination risks. Ready-to-use reagents and a straightforward protocol minimise hands-on time and reduce the potential for procedural errors.

Why Molecular Testing Matters for West Nile Virus

WNV infections are often asymptomatic or present with non-specific febrile illness, making clinical diagnosis unreliable and serological testing insufficient during the early viremic phase. Molecular detection of viral RNA provides the earliest confirmation of active infection, ahead of antibody seroconversion, and is critical for patients in whom neuroinvasive disease may develop rapidly. The dual-channel detection design with built-in internal control ensures that every negative result reflects a true absence of WNV RNA rather than a failed reaction.

Key Features & Benefits

Multiplex one-step RT-qPCR with TaqMan chemistry

Simultaneously detects WNV-specific RNA in the FAM channel and validates the run via an endogenous internal control in the HEX channel, ensuring both result accuracy and workflow reliability.

Positive control and NTC included

The positive control validates assay performance in every run, while the no-template control confirms reagent integrity and eliminates contamination risks.

Sensitive detection with Ct cut-off of 35 or below

Reliable identification of WNV RNA even in low viral load samples, enabling confident diagnosis during early or subclinical infection.

Ready-to-use reagents with 12-month shelf life

Pre-formulated reagents with a 12-month shelf life under recommended storage conditions minimise setup time, reduce procedural errors, and simplify inventory management.

Rapid turnaround

Results available significantly faster than traditional serological methods, enabling clinicians to initiate timely patient management decisions

Compatible with multiple leading PCR platforms

Validated on RapiCycler 96, Bio-Rad CFX96, QuantStudio 5, and LightCycler 480, supporting seamless integration into existing laboratory workflows.

Applications

  • Clinical & Hospital Laboratories: Enables rapid, sensitive detection of WNV RNA from EDTA blood samples, supporting timely clinical decisions for patients presenting with neurological or febrile illness in endemic areas.
  • Paediatric & Neonatal Care: Supports early identification of WNV infection in younger patients, where neuroinvasive disease including encephalitis and meningitis can present with atypical or rapidly progressing symptoms.
  • Outbreak Surveillance: Rapid molecular detection supports real-time monitoring of WNV transmission in human and animal populations, enabling targeted public health responses during seasonal outbreak periods.
  • Immunocompromised Patients: Essential for transplant recipients, oncology patients, and others with impaired immunity, where WNV infection carries a significantly elevated risk of neuroinvasive disease and fatal outcomes.
  • Travel & Occupational Health: Reliable WNV screening for travel medicine clinics and occupational health programmes serving individuals with exposure to endemic regions across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa.

Analytical Performance

  • High analytical sensitivity and specificity for WNV RNA detection
  • Ct cut-off of 35 or below for positive detection, reliable even in low viral load samples
  • Endogenous internal control (HEX) verifies RNA integrity and reaction quality in every run
  • Positive control and NTC included for full assay integrity and contamination-free validation
  • 12-month shelf life with stable performance under recommended storage conditions
